![]() This S’canoe is the ancestor of all the recent Grumman “Sportboats”, with basically the same features. Famous for their WWII aircraft, Grumman turned to manufacturing amphibious planes, motorboats, and canoes after the war. ![]() If I’m reading the labels correctly, it was made in 1955, by the Metal Boat Company Inc division of Grumman Aircraft Corp, Inc, of Marathon, LI, New York. This one came out of a bankrupt summer camp in the Catskills. Another accessory easy to make would be outrigger floats, possibly useful for small kids. If you’re somewhat handy, you should be able to make all the sailing components required. Check out Bing Images for “Grumman Sailing Canoe”, “Parts”, etc. I do have a gas can, funnel, and a plastic battery box the new owner can have for free. The wood thwart should be replaced, an easy project. It still has the mast step and wooden thwart to step the mast, but I’m sorry to say I no longer have the rudder, side boards, sail or mast. It has a transom reinforced to take a small gas or electric engine. ![]() I do not have oars, oarlocks, or paddles to go with it. It has four oarlock fittings that take standard oarlocks (galvanized or bronze, easily available at boating stores). You can paddle it like a canoe, but it also can be rowed. Paint needs scraping and repainting but the boat is actually in remarkably good shape. Since I bought it in 2008, it’s been outside. The aluminum and rivets look fine, not rotted, so it must have been stored inside. You could fish with it this summer, and have a fun project refurbishing it next winter. I believe this one was made in 1955, and it needs repainted and some TLC to make it lovely again, but meanwhile, last time I used it, it floated without any leaks and functioned perfectly. It’s the perfect sport boat, suitable for cruising around, fishing, hunting, camping. ![]() It’s about 43” wide at the widest part (at the midships oarlocks).
